Search Patterns: Design for Discovery

Search is among the most disruptive innovations of our time. It influences what we buy and where we go. It shapes how we learn and what we believe. In this provocative and inspiring book, you'll explore design patterns that apply across the categories of web, e-commerce, enterprise, desktop, mobile, social, and real-time search and discovery. Filled with colorful illustrations and examples, Search Patterns brings modern information retrieval to life, covering such diverse topics as relevance, faceted navigation, multitouch, personalization, visualization, multisensory search, and augmented reality.

"There's never been a future so unevenly distributed as the world of search and discovery is today," says best-selling author Peter Morville. "Our understanding of what does and doesn't work is advancing rapidly, yet we're often forced to use clumsy search interfaces that should never have escaped the 1990s. Users are invited to speak Boolean and then wait patiently for irrelevant results. These disparities exist because expertise is situated in multiple disciplines and design patterns are scattered across contexts. Our book aims to bridge these gaps and help design teams to make search better through incremental improvement and radical innovation..."

REVIEW: Adesso WKB-3100UB Wireless Mini Trackball Keyboard

I needed a new computer keyboard… one that would allow me to move around the room, rather than being tied down by a cable (ie. wireless). I also needed the keyboard to be compact – similar in size to a small laptop keyboard. In addition, I needed mouse control without the mouse (which meant either a built-in touchpad or trackball). My search led me to the Adesso WKB-3100UB Wireless Mini Trackball Keyboard. While the WKB-3100UB may not be absolutely perfect for some people, I have found that it fits my remote keyboard needs nicely.

To get up and running with the WKB-3100UB is a simple matter of installing some batteries and plugging in a USB dongle. Take the two included AA batteries and pop them into the compartment located on top of the backside of the keyboard. Plug the USB dongle (which acts as a wireless receiver) into any available port on any machine that supports a standard USB keyboard. This means that the WKB-3100UB can be used with PCs running Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7 and Mac OS X. It can even be used with other devices like the PlayStation 3 (which I'll talk about later). Once the dongle is connected, you turn on the keyboard with the switch on the upper left of the backside and press the Connect button on the upper right of the backside for about two to three seconds...

REVIEW: Jennifer's Body (Blu-ray and DVD)

Jennifer's Body… to be honest, I didn't think I was going to like this movie. The only reason I decided to watch it was that I like horror flicks and hot chicks. Well, maybe there was a little more to it than that – from the description, it sounded like it might be akin to some of the campy horror classics. In any case, I'm glad I gave it a chance because I enjoyed it. The feminist, girl-power undertones aside, Jennifer's Body is a decent horror story and the Unrated Version adds some good value to the title.

Mean Girl Turns Into Monster
Meet Jennifer (Megan Fox), queen bitch (and slut) of the high school in the town of Devil's Kettle (named after a bottomless whirlpool that some superstitiously believe is a gateway to Hell). Jennifer is tired of the small town life and wants some more excitement, so she takes her childhood friend Needy (Amada Seyfried) to a local bar to see a city-based indie band called Low Shoulder. Jennifer thinks the lead singer (Adam Brody) is 'saltly' (meaning sexy – although that's not what the slang term really means, but maybe the writer is trying to coin a new phrase). Anyway, the lead singer likes Jennifer too, but not for the same reasons...

REVIEW: Family Guy Presents: Something Something Something Dark Side

Family Guy Presents: Something, Something, Something, Dark Side... just as a heads-up, I have to tell you that I'm a big Family Guy fan and I loved the Star Wars movies, so I'm pretty much the perfect target audience for this type of title. With that in mind, I have to say that while I did like Dark Side, it wasn't quite as good as Blue Harvest. Still, it was enjoyable, and fans of both genres will like it. A quick side note, however, if you haven't seen Blue Harvest, you should watch that first because Dark Side continues the story started with Blue Harvest and it also contains references from the first installment.

As you may have already guessed, Dark Side is a spoof of The Empire Strikes Back. The same Family Guy characters reprise their roles here from Blue Harvest and there are also some new characters introduced to fit The Empire Strikes Back plot line. So the story goes like this... the first scene opens with our hero rebels Luke Skywalker (Chris), Han Solo (Peter), Chewbacca (Brian), and Princess Leia (Lois) on the Hoth planet. As in Strikes Back...

REVIEW: 10 Things I Hate About You (Blu-ray and DVD)

10 Things I Hate About You… believe it or not, I never saw this film when it was first released. It may be because I wasn't a teenager at the time and this is definitely a teen flick. It could also be that there were so many other high school-related movies coming out at that time that I just decided not to bother. Whatever the reason, I'm glad I finally got to see this title because it was actually a pretty good story with some laughs along the way.

Taming of the Shrew?
Another reason this film is good is because its different from all the other similar films of the time… it's actually based on Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew, albeit with a modern twist and set in modern times. The characters even get to say some lines directly from the Shakespearean play, which is a nice touch.

The story goes like this… Kat (Julia Styles) represents the shrew and she is a hard-core activist and feminist. She also has a younger sister named Bianca (Larisa Oleynik) who is the complete opposite – sort of a stuck-up princess who is more into her looks and boys than anything else. Their overprotective Dad (Larry Miller) has a rule that forbids Bianca to date until Kat starts dating. That's the premise of the story...
