Practical Artistry: Light and Exposure for Digital Photographers

Harold Davis, the widely-admired pro photographer and author of Photoblog 2.0, breaks new ground with Practical Artistry: Light & Exposure for Digital Photographers, which blends the author's stunning images in a beautifully designed book with no-nonsense insights and pragmatic guidance to help digital photographers explore their world and take great photos.

By demystifying what makes up exposure--aperture, shutter speed, and sensitivity (ISO)--Harold aims to show photographers how to measure light in order to capture their intended images. "It turns out that one of the most effective tools for measuring light is the human eye. It's likely that eventually you may do a better job than your camera," explains Harold, who lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. Along with his new book from O'Reilly, Harold is also the author of "The Photographer's Guide to Yosemite & the High Sierra" and "100 Views of the Golden Gate."

Indeed, this timely new book treats the techniques of conventional photography and the tools of the digital artist holistically; they are both integral to the best practices of modern digital photography.

Article: Fix Your Photos with the Photoshop Healing Brush

In our second photo restoration tutorial, we get some quick relief using the Healing Brush tool (for practice, see the Healing Brush tutorial in the first chapter). With a portrait photograph, your subject may be much simpler than a group shot and the Healing Brush will give you just enough control to beautifully de-age a family heirloom.

Step 1
My first step was to use Image > Adjustments > Levels and Image > Adjustments > Curves to lighten the original image and show the details. As you can see, this photo has a sepia tone and was printed on very heavy paper, resulting in a stippling effect, which I wanted to keep. When restoring a photo, you want to keep it as accurate as possible.

Step 2
I made a duplicate of the background layer. Then I chose the Healing Brush (hidden with the Patch tool and the Color Replacement tool). Keeping brush properties at Normal and Source as Sampled and selected Aligned, I started with the smallest brush possible, usually as wide as the scratch you are working on.

Article: Restoring Old Photographs with Photoshop

Restoring old photos requires a bit of skill and a lot of patience, yet it's one of the most rewarding techniques you can learn. Bring history alive again using some of Photoshop's most basic tools.

Step 1
I chose this image as an original because it's typical of many of old photos: a good image that's showing some aging, minor scratches, and lots of artifacts that need to be removed. Some old photos are in need of major repair work that might require replacing missing areas with pieces of other images. I haven't addressed that in this tutorial, but these techniques are useful in all restoration.

Step 2
Photo restoration is generally a job that requires patience. You almost always need to work over the entire image, and usually, as in this case, most of it will be done in small steps. You can use the Healing Brush tool, but I prefer using the Brush tool, which mimics the conventional way of restoration: brushwork and airbrushing.

Smith Micro Software, Inc. announced the launch of StuffIt Deluxe® 12, its award winning archive and compression software for Microsoft Windows. StuffIt Deluxe 12 includes a breakthrough in image compression technology that enables full quality images such as TIFFs, Photoshop documents and Bitmaps to be compressed by as much as 70 percent without reducing image quality. StuffIt also provides improved compression of Microsoft Office documents including PowerPoint, PDF documents and MP3 audio files.

“Unlike competing solutions, StuffIt seamlessly integrates a wide variety of specialized compression technologies to ensure that data is always compressed and optimized using the best available method,” said Matthew Covington, Director of Compression Solutions for Smith Micro Software. “Existing compression methods such as Zip use a single compression method regardless of the type of data. These compression methods limit archive compression size, flexibility and value. In addition, StuffIt’s support for lossless compression of high resolution JPEG images and Microsoft Office 2007 documents, such as large PowerPoint files, makes it the most effective compression solution for anyone looking to archive, back up or transmit rich media content.”

New Sony Digital Voice Recorders

Sony introduced the UX series of digital voice recorders designed to fit the needs of consumers, professionals and academics who want one device for voice, music and file storage.

The ICD-UX70 and ICD-UX80 models record in MP3 stereo for high-quality sound and support MP3 music playback. With ID3 tagging, the recorders display artist and album information.

"This new series is the Swiss Army knife of digital voice recorders," said Stephen Teplansky, product manager for digital voice recorders at Sony Electronics. "Though its primary functionality is for voice recording, it does a great job as a music recorder and MP3 player as well."

Because the UX series records in stereo in the MP3 format, the digital voice recorders serve as convenient, high-quality portable recording studios. They make it easy to record "jam" sessions, load them into music software, along the lines of Sony's Sound Forge Audio Studio(R), for editing, mixing and transferring recordings to CDs.

Intellishred Jam Proof Shredders

From cross-cut capabilities to advanced safety features, the shredder category has continued to evolve in order to address consumer demand and usage requirements. Fellowes, Inc., the leading shredder manufacturer and inventor of the personal shredder, will transform the category once more by eliminating consumers' number one shredder complaint -- paper jams. Just in time for tax season, Fellowes is launching the Intellishred(TM) Series, a new generation of 100 percent jam proof shredders.

The new series (PS-79Ci, SB-89Ci and SB-99Ci) is uniquely designed to address personal deskside and shared use shredding needs in the home, home office or business setting. The shredders eliminate jams and prevent overloads by instantly calculating the amount of paper being fed into the machine.

The proprietary Intellishred technology features a sophisticated sensor that measures the thickness of a paper stack and automatically stops a paper jam before it occurs. Similar to a traffic light which lets a driver know when they can proceed, an indicator light lets the user know when they are nearing sheet capacity. A green to yellow light indicates the user is within paper capacity.
