What Is a Tabletop Roleplaying Game?
Legend in the Mist is a tabletop roleplaying game, or TTRPG for short. If you're unfamiliar with the term, think of it as a shared story where nobody knows exactly how things will end – not even the person running the game.
Together with your friends, you'll create a Fellowship of Heroes and venture into a world of folklore, mystery, danger, and wonder. Some Heroes are humble shepherds, wandering tinkers, village healers, or hunters. Others may become renowned warriors, cunning witches, dragon-slayers, kings, queens, or figures destined to become legends. The journey from ordinary folk to extraordinary Heroes is one of the central themes of Legend in the Mist.
Your imagination is the most important tool at the table. There are no miniatures required, no expensive maps, and no need to memorize endless lists of abilities. Instead, you describe what your Hero attempts to do, while the rules help determine what happens when success is uncertain.
Unlike many fantasy roleplaying games, your Hero isn't defined by numerical attributes or long skill lists. Instead, Heroes are built from Themes, Tags, Quests, and the stories that emerge during play. What matters isn't whether your Hero has a Strength score of 18 or 19; what matters is that they're known as the strongest blacksmith in the valley, carry the blade of a forgotten king, or refuse to abandon those in need.
Guiding the story is the Narrator. The Narrator describes the world around the Heroes. They tell you what you see, hear, smell, feel, and sometimes what you fear. They portray everyone you encounter along your journey, from suspicious innkeepers and eccentric hedge-wizards to trolls lurking beneath ancient bridges and spirits that emerge from the Mist itself. They present opportunities, mysteries, dangers, and difficult choices.
In short, the Narrator brings the world to life. Meanwhile, each player controls a single Hero.
• The Narrator establishes a scene and asks the timeless question: "What do you do?"
• You describe what your Hero attempts to accomplish. Perhaps you're tracking a beast through the wilderness, negotiating with a local lord, investigating strange lights dancing through the forest, or attempting to convince a suspicious village elder that you're not responsible for the missing chickens.
• Most of the time, if success is obvious, the Narrator may simply describe what happens. When the outcome is uncertain, the rules come into play. Relevant Tags, Themes, circumstances, and a roll of the dice help determine the result.
• Success is never merely a question of whether you succeed or fail. Often, you'll succeed but face Consequences. You may get exactly what you want while simultaneously attracting unwanted attention, suffering an injury, revealing a secret, or creating an entirely new problem.
• When your Hero speaks, most groups prefer speaking in character, as though they truly were their Hero. Don't worry if your performance doesn't earn you awards. The goal isn't perfect acting – it's having fun and creating memorable stories together.
• Throughout your adventures, your Hero will grow and change. Quests will shape their future, Themes will evolve, and choices made during play will leave lasting marks upon the story and the world around them. (
If you're planning to take on the role of Narrator, there are a few things worth remembering.
First – and this is important – you are not the Heroes' enemy. Yes, you'll portray monsters, villains, curses, ancient evils, and creatures that would very much like to turn the Heroes into cautionary tales. But your goal isn't to defeat the Fellowship. Your role is to create exciting situations, difficult choices, dramatic moments, and memorable adventures.
The best stories aren't the ones where the Heroes effortlessly overcome every obstacle. Nor are they the ones where everyone dies five minutes into the first session. The best stories are the ones where the outcome remains uncertain until the very end.
Second, don't let the rules get in the way of the story. The Mist Engine is designed to support storytelling rather than restrict it. If you can't remember a specific rule, make a reasonable ruling and keep the game moving. Maintaining the flow of the narrative is often more important than stopping the session to spend ten minutes searching through a rulebook.
Third, no plan survives contact with a Fellowship of Heroes.
You may prepare:
• A published Adventure.
• A Campaign consisting of multiple Adventures.
• An outline filled with locations, mysteries, characters, and dangers.
• A handful of notes scribbled on the back of a shopping receipt.
• Absolutely nothing whatsoever.
All of these are valid approaches.
Sooner or later, however, your players will become fascinated by something you invented thirty seconds ago and completely ignore the mystery you've spent three weeks preparing.
Don't just accept this; embrace it.
Some of the most memorable roleplaying moments emerge from pure improvisation. If the Heroes decide that investigating a suspicious goat is more important than stopping an ancient curse from consuming the valley, perhaps the goat deserves further investigation.
The Narrator sets the stage, raises the stakes, introduces challenges, and reveals mysteries hidden beyond the veil of the Mist. The Heroes decide how to face those challenges and what kind of legends they will become.
Together, you create stories that nobody at the table could have predicted.
And those stories are usually far more interesting than anything you could have planned on your own.
