A Ghost Story on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD from Lionsgate"Written and directed by critically acclaimed filmmaker David Lowery and boasting a top-notch cast A Ghost Story stars Academy Award winner Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara as a young couple who -- after being separated by loss -- discover an eternal connection and a love that is infinite." That is the official description for A Ghost Story, now available on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD from Lionsgate, which has provided NewTechReview with a Blu-ray NFR copy for review.

When I first heard about A Ghost Story, I was a bit worried it would turn out to be either a remake or something very similar to the very popular Ghost starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. Luckily, it's not even close, even though the official description could be used for either film. Instead, A Ghost Story depicts the journey of one soul traversing from the moment of death to the moment of realization that it's time to move on.

The film also tells its story without any fancy special effects (except for one scene showing what seems to be a glowing doorway to the afterlife) and instead uses very sparse scenes with little dialogue. Some scenes may seem to drag on (such as the body in the morgue or the pie eating segment), but trust me, there is a purpose to these slow but emotional parts of the plot. Parts of the film production may also seem silly (or confusing) at first, especially the ghost being depicting as a person walking around with a sheet over their head. If you're patient and allow yourself to think about what's happening with the story as the film goes on, the esoteric aspects will pay off.

The Blu-ray edition comes in the standard packing with a single disc along with a code for the Digital HD copy. The picture in A Ghost Story is also a bit different as it's presented with an aspect ratio of 1.33:1 but with black bars along the sides and rounded corners on the visible part of the scenes. Also, as I mentioned earlier, many of the scenes are sparse with very little dialogue (or none at all), so all you'll hear is the environment, which is usually subdued. However, there are more active scenes as well, and in either case, the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track presents everything very well.

Bonus features for the film include:
* Audio Commentary - Director David Lowery, Cinematographer Andrew Droz Palermo, Production Designer Jade Healy, and Composer Daniel Hart discuss the film.
* A Ghost Story and the Inevitable Passing of Time - A 30-minute featurette with a roundtable of cast and crew talking about the film.
* A Composer's Story - A 4-minute featurette about film composer Daniel Hart.
* Deleted Scene - A 5-minute deleted scene in its raw form that doesn't really add to the plot, but is still interesting to watch.

When I first started watching A Ghost Story, I wasn't sure what to expect. The film moves slowly and seems a bit strange at the beginning, but I'm glad I continued watching because the emotional ride that it provides is rewarding and I can definitely recommend it.
