American Gods — Seasons 1–3: The Complete Series, now available on DVD"Set in a hidden world where magic is real and gods exist on earth, AMERICAN GODS chronicles the brewing war between Old Gods and New Gods, as the traditional gods of mythology are steadily losing believers to a burgeoning pantheon of modern gods focused on technology and money. The story across three seasons centers around ex-convict Shadow Moon, bodyguard for the mysterious Mr. Wednesday, an Old God trying to rebuild the power and influence the Old Gods once had. As events unfold and Shadow struggles with his identity and place in the world, AMERICAN GODS examines humanity’s conflicted relationship with faith and the unknown." That is the official description for American Gods — Seasons 1–3: The Complete Series, now available on DVD from Lionsgate, which has provided NewTechReview with a DVD copy for review.

I've always been facinated by greek mythology and the notion that in the past gods were real. While they didn't live amoung us, they still frequented earth often and relied on the prayers of humans for their power. Based on the best-selling novel by Neil Gaiman and created by Bryan Fuller, this series takes that concept further and puts forth the notion that gods are definitely real, they live amoung us and that they are separate into two types: the old gods and the new gods.

Of course, like many shows and movies, while the show is based on the book, it doesn't strictly adhere to its content. The basi premise is still there, but the show brodens the scope of the story, rearranges some of the plot, provides more comic relief, and includes a much more visual approach for the benefit of viewers. Personally, I think this is a good thing. It gives more life to both the book and the show, and fans get to experience two different takes on the way the story is presented.

American Gods — Seasons 1–3: The Complete Series is presented on DVD in 16x9 (1.78.1) aspect ratio with English, French and German DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 , as well as English, French and German subtitles.

If you're a fan of the writers and their book, or you simply enjoyed watching shows that delve into the realm of magic and what could be, then American Gods is definitely worth watching. The story, presentation, acting and overall production are excellent, and fans will more than likely want to add this to their collections.
