Mac OS X for Unix Geeks

If you're a developer or system administrator lured to Mac OS X because of its Unix roots, you'll quickly discover that performing Unix tasks on a Mac is different than what you're accustomed to. Mac OS X for Unix Geeks (O'Reilly, $34.99 USD) serves as a bridge between Apple's Darwin OS and the more traditional Unix systems. This clear, concise guide gives you a tour of Mac OS X's Unix shell in both Leopard and Tiger, and helps you find the facilities that replace or correspond to standard Unix utilities.

In this fourth edition, the authors have not only updated it for Mac OS X 10.5, but have tweaked the book to make it even greater than before. Co-author and O'Reilly editor Brian Jepson says, "Rich Rosen joined us as a co-author on this edition, and really fleshed out some of the later chapters of the book. For example, he added a section on Ruby to Chapter 17, 'Other Programming Languages,' and really worked over Chapter 15, 'Using Mac OS X as a Server.' Because of this, Ernie and I got to focus on some other areas of the book and we all feel that this edition is what this book's always wanted to be. I think the same could be said of Mac OS X Leopard--it's really grown into its skin, I mean, fur!"

Review: Smart People (Blu-ray DVD)

I consider myself to be a smart person. Maybe not a genius, although I have yet to take the Mensa test, so who knows? As a smart person, I admit I am more prone to intellectual rather than emotional persuits, but I like to think I have a decent set of social skills. Then again, I'm not married, don't date very often, and I work most of the time, so maybe I am a little lacking in my social life. That's part of the premise behind Smart People from Miramax Films, but the film goes quite a bit further by poking fun at and exaggerating the social ineptitude of very intelligent people.

Smart People Synopsis
Ever since the death of his wife, Professor Lawrence Wetherhold (played by Dennis Quaid) has very little enthusiasm for life. He works most of the time and is self-absorbed to the point of not really knowing what is going on in the lives of his children. He has no regard for his students and fails to remember their names as pointed out on numerous occasions in the film. Then a chance accident changes his circumstances and turns his life into a bit of a circus. At the hospital, his doctor (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) turns out to be a former student, but of course, he doesn't remember her. After a colleague of the doctor tells Wetherhold about her, he becomes interested and Wetherhold and the doctor become involved in a dating relationship...

Python for Unix and Linux System Administration

All languages are tools: simply a means to get work done. They have value insofar as they help you get your job done better. So state Noah Gift and Jeremy Jones in Python for Unix and Linux System Administration (O'Reilly, US $49.99), adding, "We believe that Python is a valuable tool, specifically because it enables you to get your work done efficiently."

So is Python better than Perl, Bash, Ruby, or any other language? "It's really difficult to put that sort of qualitative label on a programming language, since the tool is so closely tied to the thought process of the programmer who is using it," write Gift and Jones. "Programming is a subjective, deeply personal activity. We're not going to argue that Python is better, but we will explain the reasons that we believe Python can be an excellent choice. We'll also explain why it is a great fit for programming sysadmin tasks."

Review: Sony Vegas Pro 8 Video Software

Video, video, video… everyone is making movies these days and there are plenty of choices when it comes to video software. This is especially true in the consumer software market. However, the professional video software category is still lead by a chosen few, one of which is Sony Vegas Pro. With each new version, Vegas Pro has stepped closer and closer to being a full-fledged video production application providing the same high-end features as its competitors. Vegas Pro 7 came close, but Vegas Pro 8 adds features that have been needed for quite some time.

There is no doubt that Vegas Pro 8 is a significant upgrade, especially for those needing multicamera support and wanting higher-quality video rendering. In addition, this version is the only reliable way to run Vegas on the Windows Vista platform. The ProType Titler is a nice addition and the new mixing console adds significant features and flexibility to the already powerful audio tools. Support for additional video formats including Blu-ray bring Vegas in line with the competition. While I did mention some aspects of the software that I would like to see improved, there are no shortcomings that would keep me from recommending Vegas Pro 8 to both newcomers and upgraders. Vegas Pro has always provided a level of sophistication combined with an ease-of-use factor that has been a step ahead of most other video applications. Version 8 adds even more professional-level features without compromising the easy workflow.
