World's First 50-Hour AVCHD Camcorder

JVC has added three new high definition camcorders to its HD Everio line, including a pair of dual-format models, one of which records up to 50 hours of AVCHD Full HD video.

Two new models, the GZ-HD40 and GZ-HD30, are the world's first AVCHD / MPEG-2 dual-format camcorders, allowing access to the superior long time compression afforded by AVCHD, as well as MPEG-2's superior editing and post-production environment. Both offer 1920 x 1080 Full HD recording in both formats to a 120GB (GZ-HD40) or 80GB (GZ-HD30) internal hard disk drive. The third new model, the GZ-HD10, offers 1440 x 1080 recording in the AVCHD format to a 40GB hard drive.

Technologies behind the scenes include new CMOS imaging chips with interpolation technology, the HD Gigabrid Duo chip that includes codecs for AVCHD in all camcorders and MPEG-2 in the GZ-HD40 and GZ-HD30 as well as noise reduction technology, and 1920 x 1080/60P output for all camcorders via HDMI(TM) (V.1.3 with x.v.Color). Ease of use innovations include Intelligent Grouping, which sorts and groups together similar themed scenes for easier access, and Digest Playback, which creates a video montage of scenes, much like a "coming attractions" clip, when they're burned to a DVD.

Her newest book, Painting the Web (O'Reilly) is the first comprehensive book on web graphics to come along in years. Powers demonstrates how readers of any level can take advantage of the graphics and animation capabilities built into today's powerful browsers, and have fun while doing it. Filled with full-color illustrations, the book covers GIFs, JPEGs, and PNGs, raster and vector graphics, CSS, Ajax effects, the canvas objects, SVG, geographical applications, and more—everything that designers (and non-designers) use to virtually paint the Web.

The Art of Black and White Photography

Over the last few years, most books on photography emphasized explaining the new breed of cameras and how to master the digital imaging workflow. In The Art of Black and White Photography, Torsten Andreas Hoffmann takes a different approach, as he focuses on image composition and image capture, with an emphasis on the creative aspects of black and white photography, as well as on the digital workflow.

After introducing the ground rules of composition, the author illustrates their applications with various photographic genres such as architecture, street photography, portraiture, and surreal photography with his own stunning black and white images. In the second part of the book, Hoffmann illustrates the elements of a “ photographic language”, which distinguishes creative photography from random shooting.

Review: Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds

I've never played a round of real golf in my life. As a matter of fact, I don't think I've ever even stepped foot on a golf course. Now that's not to say I don't know anything about the game of golf, because I do. I've seen all the Caddyshack movies, I watch the occasional golf tournament on weekends, and most importantly I am a veteran player of the Hot Shots Golf video game series from Sony Computer Entertainment America. My only regret is that I didn't start playing Hot Shots Golf until number 3 came out on the PS2. So I missed 1 and 2, but 3 and 4 were great games and now SCEA aims to bring the Hot Shots series to the PS3 with the release of Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds.

Both Fun and Challenging
As with previous versions, Out of Bounds provides an arcade style of gameplay, but with a level of sophistication that will challenge anyone. Out of Bounds provides 15 playable characters (both guys and gals), each with their own personality and playing skills. You can play on six different courses in various locations, although you'll start off with only 2 characters and one course – the others can be unlocked as you play through the game.

Review: The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe

My first experiences in Narnia were a long time ago. I can't remember my exact age when I first read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, but what I do remember was a wonderful story full of adventure and excitement. I don't know how many times I hid in my closet, closing the door, and wishing I really could travel to Narnia rather than just in my imagination. I also remember when Narnia was brought to life as an animated feature and shown on TV.

Since then there have been many adaptations of the book, but when I heard that Disney was making their own version, I knew that this one would be the best… and I wasn't wrong. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, from Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media, not only transforms the book into an exciting feature film, but expands on the details that C.S. Lewis had left to his readers imaginations.

Face to Face: Photographing People

The arrival of balmy weather ushers in the travel season--rich with opportunities for capturing your family, friends, and the new people you meet in photos. But taking memorable images is an art. You need to engage people with the camera and understand the photo shoot process.

Fortunately, O'Reilly's latest release -- Face to Face: Rick Sammon's Complete Guide to Photographing People -- offers proven techniques and tips you need for photographing people here and abroad, from different cultures, young and old. Even better, Rick Sammon, master travel photographer and author of 27 books, packed his latest publication with inspiring, beautifully rendered images of people from around the globe.

Fine Art Printing for Photographers

Until recently, turning digital images into high quality fine art prints was only a dream, but this has now become a reality. Today's digital cameras produce image data files making large-format output possible at high resolution. As printing technology moves forward at an equally fast pace, the new inkjet printers are now capable of printing with great precision at a very fine resolution, providing an amazing tonal range and significantly superior image permanence. Moreover, these printers are now affordable to the serious photographer. In the hands of knowledgeable and experienced photographers, they can help create prints comparable to the highest quality darkroom prints on photographic paper.

Fine Art Printing for Photographers – 2nd Edition by Uwe Steinmueller and Juergen Gulbins provides the necessary foundation for fine art printing: the understanding of color management, profiling, paper, and inks. It demonstrates how to set up the printing workflow as it guides the reader step-by-step through the process of converting an image file to an outstanding fine art print.

O'Reilly MySQL in a Nutshell

MySQL has held steady as one of the great open source success stories, and there is no indication that this will change in the foreseeable future, in spite of its recent acquisition. "Although MySQL AB has recently been purchased by Sun Microsystems, the software and the organization has remained intact," reports author Russell J. T. Dyer. "The software will only get better now that the company has the money to expand its software engineering department. More importantly, the software will be broadly adopted by larger companies now that it has the backing of a multi-billion dollar company like Sun. Sun can assure large companies, institutions, and governments that MySQL is here to stay and that it's fully supported."

MySQL aficionados confirm that this is indeed the case, making the new second edition of Dyer's book, MySQL in a Nutshell even more timely. "There have been several changes to MySQL since the first edition: in particular the stabilization of version 5.1 of MySQL," says Dyer. "I wanted to expand the book to include the changes and improvements to MySQL. This new edition includes the many new features such as stored procedures, stored functions, triggers, and views."

Review: Adventures of Young Indiana Jones: Vol. 3

Back in 1992, George Lucas launched a TV series called The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. Unfortunately, back then I was fresh out of college, looking for a job, and didn't have time to watch TV so I never saw the show. My research tells me that it was a show about the exploits of Indy when he was a young kid and then a young man. Along the way it explained how Indy came to later be an adventure-seeking archeologist. It also interspersed a lot of historic references and was meant to be both entertaining and educational.

Later, Lucas decided to release the series on DVD, but instead of just transferring the material as-is, he compiled it into a collection of feature-length movies. Volume 1 and Volume 2 were previously released and have garnered good reviews from Indiana Jones fans. The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones: Volume Three marks the completion of the collection.

Volume 3 consists of no less than 10 DVDs containing 7 feature length (approximately 90 minute) movies along with over 15 hours of special features that explore the world history and historical figures that inspired the adventures of young Indiana Jones.
